PORTLAND COPWATCH ANNOUNCES TRAINING CYCLE
Pre-register now for our three-part training cycle:
Second, Third and Fourth Monday, November 2008
6:00 PM
Center for Intercultural Organizing office, 700 N Killingsworth (near Albina)
Portland Copwatch has scheduled a cycle of the three trainings we offer to those who wish to
volunteer
with us or those who are just curious about police accountability issues.
The three trainings are:
--Portland Copwatch Orientation (Monday, November 10, 6-7:30 PM)-1.5 hours
--Your Rights and the Police Seminar (Monday, November 17, 6-7:30 PM)-1.5 hours
--Portland Copwatch training (Monday, November 24, 6-8:30 PM)-2.5 hours
All to be held at the Center for Intercultural Organizing office, 700 N Killingsworth just
east of Albina (near the #4 & 72 Bus Lines), at 6 PM.
PLEASE pre-register; space is limited. We request a $10 total donation to secure your place
in the trainings.
That's right just $10 covers all three sessions, regardless of how many you are planning to attend.
No one
will be turned away for lack of funds.
The donation will help us cover costs related to the trainings.
At the end of the cycle we will issue a certificate indicating which trainings you have completed.
It is highly recommended to attend the first two trainings as background for the Copwatch training
on the
24th.
Please RSVP by phone or email and send your donation via mail.
Details on the trainings:
Portland Copwatch orientation (November 10)
--------------------------------------
introduces you to our organization and many of the issues we work on, covers possibilities for
volunteering, and contextualizes some of the "Alphabet soup" we talk about at meetings. (What's
the
PJTTF? The CRC? What's the AMA, the DFZ? How can you express being anti-police brutality
but not
anti-police?)
The orientation is pretty much mandatory for people who want to be active members of Portland
Copwatch.
Your Rights and the Police seminar (November 17)
------------------------------------------
reviews basic rights to know for being stopped by, harmed by, or when observing the police. A
lawyer
will be present to help answer legal questions best not answered by the volunteers at PCW.
Copwatch training (November 24)
------------------------------------------
Learn how to safely, legally and effectively monitor police behavior.
Includes background on what to do when stopped by police and how to file complaints.
Includes role playing and a training video.
