PORTLAND COPWATCH CELEBRATES 10th ANNIVERSARY
Continues educating the public
This issue of the People's Police Report marks our 10th year of publishing since late 1993.
(OK, so issue #1 really came out in December 1993...30 is a nice round number.) Portland
Copwatch was formed in late 1992 as the People Overseeing Police Study Group; we changed our
name in 1996 and skipped our organizational anniversary last year.
In the past few months, we held two "Your Rights and the Police" seminars (one at the invitation of
a Portland State University student group, the other for our volunteers), a Portland Copwatch
orientation, and a Copwatch training (at the invitation of the Portland Peaceful Response Coalition)
in late August. We have attended all of the Citizen Review Committee meetings, including nearly all
of the work groups, raised concerns about the IPR (see below) and the DEA Task Force (see Updates) with City
Council, given numerous media interviews, supported the movement for justice for Kendra James,
and helped dozens of clients who have called our incident report line (503-321-5120).
Thanks for ten years of community support, as we promote police accountability through civilian
action.
If you would like to order any back-issues of the PPR, they are $1 per copy per
issue. As an anniversary special, we are offering all 29 back-issues for a cost of $25 (please allow
two weeks for delivery).
If you want to be informed of upcoming trainings and other events please be sure to send
us an email at newsletter@portlandcopwatch.org. Thanks to
those who replied to our reader survey from PPR #29. (Also write to us if you'd like a copy
of the survey, which was also included with PPR #30.) The people who replied the first time
mostly liked the content, with a few people thinking the layout is too crowded.
